About the Event

Newark Peace Making Summit
May 13th-15th 2011

HH the Dalai Lama will convene an historic summit of peacemakers at the invitation of the City of Newark and hosted by the Mayor of Newark, the Honorable Cory A. Booker.

This Summit will bring together H.H. the Dalai Lama together with leading international and national peacemakers, community leaders, policy makers, business leaders, and grassroots activists. They will examine, refine, and communicate best practices for bringing about positive social, economic, and personal change benefiting communities at home and abroad. This Summit will examine productive solutions to the problems we face today. The participants will be charged with articulating these ideas so they can be adopted by communities where violence is a way of life.

The City of Newark is the setting for this event because it has faced many of the problems found in other cities.Their dynamic mayor, the Honorable Cory A. Booker, and the current administration, along with the long standing efforts of his many colleagues and peers from all walks of life throughout the City of Newark, have demonstrated a clear record of progress and accomplishemnt in solving these problems. It is a city on the rise, an inspiration for the Summit and for other communities.

In 1997 Tibet House US produced a Peacemaking Conference in San Francisco. The conference was seminal in opening up the conversation publicly to practical applications of non-violent activism. These ideas were directed at communities where violence threatened a way of life in the Bay Area. After learning about the 1997 conference, Infinite Possibilities Foundation’s founder and President Mr. Drew Katz recognized the value of .H. the Dalai Lama and the work of Tibet House US. His goal is to replicate this model for the benefit of Newark and by extension all communities impeded by violence. This Summit will present productive solutions to the problems we face today as opposed to the destructive “solutions” that are all too often tried and fail at great expense to all parties concerned.
